‘Two riyals’ shops under scanner for fake goods
In a major campaign, the largest of its kind in the Kingdom, the Ministry of Commerce and Investment (MCI) has launched a Kingdomwide inspection campaign at all retail outlets against fake products.
According to a MCI official, the retail outlets include shops selling goods at low, fixed prices of SR 2, SR 5 and SR 10.
He stressed that the shopkeepers found guilty of selling fake goods will be prosecuted under local laws. They face heavy fines and even closure of their businesses if the offenses are grave enough.
As part of its inspection strategy, the MCI team sends an advance team of ministry officials, posing as customers, to inspect the quality of goods on sale. Following the initial report from the team, the ministry deploys an inspection team comprising responsible officers and security men to raid the shops.
The advance team also investigates the sources of the counterfeit products.
The MCI emphasized that it would not hesitate to take stern measures against shops that sell fake goods. It called on all consumers to lodge their complaints through the MCI Consumer Call Center, 1900, or the official website of the ministry. They can also file a Commercial Violation Report.
