Thuwal on the Red Sea: A Hub of History, Academia, and Fresh Fish
Historically vital for fishing, pearl diving, and trade, Thuwal has long been a prominent commercial center in Makkah Region, taking its name from the Thuwal Valley that flanks the city to the south and north.
Thuwal, located 80 kilometers north of Jeddah, remains a city of significant strategic importance. It is home to King Abdullah University of Science and Technology, one of the world’s largest and most prestigious modern universities, spanning approximately 36 million square meters.
The city boasts a fishing port that accommodates 180 boats and a fully serviced facility for 120 pleasure vessels. Its northern corniche, covering 385,000 square meters, connects to a 250,000-square-meter island, highlighting Thuwal's blend of natural beauty and modern amenities.
A cornerstone of Thuwal’s economy is its renowned fish auction, held daily after Asr prayer until sunset or until the supply runs out. This lively market offers fresh catch directly from the Red Sea and exclusively features local Thuwal fish, including highly sought-after varieties such as red najil, harid, shaour, and hamour. Prices usually range from SAR50 to SAR300 per fish, depending on the type. Fishermen often make trips lasting up to three days or return daily after Fajr prayer to supply the auction.
Buyers and shop owners consistently praise the Thuwal auction for its lower prices and guaranteed fresh quality, making it a preferred destination for fish enthusiasts both within the city and beyond.
