Egypt’s Salt Mountains: A Winter Ecotourism Gem in Port Fouad

Located 200 km from Cairo at the northern entrance of the Suez Canal, Port Fouad’s salt mountains have emerged as a premier ecotourism destination, drawing thousands of visitors each winter.

These massive, pristine white formations, which resemble European glaciers, originated from geological forces dating back to 1859. Today, the salt flats cover more than 6.8 million square meters and produce 300,000 tons of salt annually, serving as a vital economic engine for both local and international industries.

Port Fouad Mayor Dr. Islam Bahnasawy highlighted the mountains as a unique cultural and recreational destination where tourists enjoy activities such as salt-skiing and photography. The area’s popularity stems from its striking resemblance to a snow-covered landscape, offering a surreal experience in which visitors toss salt into the air to simulate snowfall against the backdrop of the historic Suez Canal region.
