Northern Borders Region: A Cornerstone of Saudi Food Security with Thriving Livestock Sector

Livestock farming in Northern Borders Region stands as a vital pillar of national food security and a significant economic and strategic asset for the Kingdom, strengthened by the ongoing efforts of the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture to advance and preserve this crucial sector.

The region's temperate desert climate provides extensive natural pastures, fostering efficient livestock farming and creating an ideal environment for raising sheep, camels, and goats. It is recognized as one of the richest regions in Saudi Arabia in terms of livestock resources.

A report from the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture's Northern Borders Region branch indicates a total livestock population of 7,551,997, including 7,258,950 sheep, 235,814 goats, 56,925 camels, and 308 cattle. Livestock breeders in the region have affirmed that government support, particularly through veterinary services, vaccination and healthcare programs, and technical and advisory assistance, has significantly improved production and breeding efficiency.

In a move to enhance the efficient use of natural resources and promote economic development, the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture recently unveiled a unique investment opportunity: the establishment of a wool textile conversion facility in the Umm Khansir area of Arar. This project is a key ministry initiative to stimulate conversion industries linked to the livestock sector. It aims to create sustainable investment opportunities, support the local economy, diversify income sources, and develop the livestock sector's value chain by transforming it from a traditional resource into an advanced industry that contributes substantially to the national economy and generates job opportunities for local residents.
