Aseer's Distinct Rock Formations Boost Mountain Tourism
Amidst the highlands of a public park in Tanumah Governorate, roughly 150 kilometers north of Abha, a striking natural rock formation, known as Al-Ma'tafa rock, rises in isolation against towering peaks, valleys, and lush slopes, drawing nature enthusiasts and photographers to Aseer Region.
Standing over 60 meters tall, the landmark features an elongated shape that broadens toward its summit and tapers at the base, evoking the form of a traditional cutting tool. Its distinct profile creates varying visual impressions depending on the vantage point and surrounding topography.
Located about 700 meters from the nearest paved access road, the site is reachable via scenic walking paths that reveal panoramic mountain views, native vegetation, and sweeping valley vistas. Low-hanging fog and shifting cloud cover frequently envelop the highlands, creating a dynamic backdrop popular for landscape photography.
The site also holds strong potential for ecotourism and adventure sports, offering opportunities to develop guided hiking paths, scenic viewpoints, and assessed rock-climbing routes, further enriching mountain tourism across the region.
