African Grey Hornbill Highlights Jazan Region’s Rich Biodiversity

Jazan Region is renowned for its rich natural beauty and biodiversity, supported by a wide range of habitats, including coastlines, valleys, and mountainous highlands. These diverse ecosystems provide ideal conditions for numerous wildlife species, including the African grey hornbill, one of the distinctive birds found in southwestern Saudi Arabia.
The bird, known locally as “Abu Ma‘wal”, is recognized by its brownish-grey plumage, long curved beak, and medium-length tail tipped with white, features that make it easily identifiable in its natural habitat. Its diet includes a variety of insects, small reptiles, and wild fruits, allowing it to play an important ecological role by helping control insect populations and dispersing wild plant seeds.
The presence of this species across Jazan’s natural landscapes reflects the health and diversity of the region’s ecosystems and vegetation, highlighting the environmental richness that supports the sustainability of a wide range of wildlife.
