What is the First Minaret in Islam?

The Caliph Omar Ibn Al-Khattab Mosque in Dumat Al-Jandal, Al-Jouf Region, remains one of the most significant architectural legacies of early Islam, featuring a layout that mirrors the design of the Prophet’s Mosque in Madinah and a rectangular prayer hall that preserves the authentic simplicity of early Islamic worship spaces.

Constructed using traditional mud-brick and stone techniques, the mosque retains many of its original structural components, including the central columns and the pulpit (minbar), which were strategically placed to project the imam’s voice to the worshippers.

The mosque's most striking feature is its historic minaret, widely recognized as the first minaret built in the Islamic era. Its unique square design measures three meters on each side at the base and gradually narrows as it ascends, ending in a distinct semi-pyramidal peak. This landmark serves as a primary example of the transition in Islamic architecture, showcasing the shift from simple enclosures to the inclusion of vertical structures for the call to prayer.
