Saudi Water Authority Raises Eastern Region Desalination Capacity to 3 Million m³ per Day
The Saudi Water Authority (SWA) stated that Eastern Region has witnessed a package of water projects that have contributed to strengthening the sustainability of water supply through expanded production capacity, the development of transmission systems, and increased storage capacity.
SWA explained that these projects raised the total desalinated water production capacity in Eastern Region to 3 million cubic meters per day, following the commissioning of three production systems. These include the Al-Khobar Production System (Phases one and two) with a capacity of 840,000 cubic meters per day, the Jubail Production System (phase four) with a capacity of 400,000 cubic meters per day, and the Jubail Production System with a capacity of 1 million cubic meters per day.
On the transmission side, SWA reported that desalinated water transmission systems were implemented and expanded, increasing operational capacity to more than 3.1 million cubic meters per day. This was achieved through interconnection projects linking Al-Khobar to Dammam, Jubail to cities across Eastern Region, and Al-Khobar to Hofuf in Al-Ahsa Governorate, in addition to King Salman Energy Park (SPARK). These projects increased transmission capacity by 190% compared to previous levels.
The authority noted that desalinated water storage reservoirs were constructed and upgraded, raising storage capacity in the Eastern Region by 140%, which supports supply sustainability during peak periods and enhances the readiness of the water system to address operational variables.
In addition, SWA adopted advanced operational maneuvering plans, including the application of reverse pumping across water transmission systems, ensuring greater operational flexibility and the sustainable delivery of water to beneficiaries under various conditions. Supporting operational solutions were also implemented during emergency situations to enhance supply reliability and ensure uninterrupted water service.
The authority affirmed that these projects serve the cities of Safwa, Ras Tanura, Qatif, Saihat, Dammam, Dhahran, Al-Khobar, Al-Ahsa, and SPARK as part of its ongoing efforts to ensure stable water supplies and raise the reliability of water services provided to beneficiaries.
