Najran Marks World Day for Cultural Diversity
Najran celebrated World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development, observed on May 21, by showcasing its rich historical identity and diverse heritage, highlighting a unique landscape of archaeological sites, traditional mud-brick architecture, intangible heritage, and generational crafts.
The region's deep historical fabric shines through prominent monuments like the Al-Ukhdood Archaeological Site and the Hima Cultural Area. Excavations and rock inscriptions at these locations reveal ancient intersecting trade routes and complex human interactions across the Arabian Peninsula. The resulting wealth of archaeological materials is displayed in local museums, offering researchers and visitors key insights into early economic and religious development.
Najran's mud-brick houses form a distinct architectural record of local traditions, utilizing local materials like mud, straw, and wood in harmony with the desert environment. Complementing this architecture is an intangible heritage rich with folk arts, poetry, and traditional dances. Furthermore, generational crafts such as handcrafted pottery, weaving, and metalwork continue to foster local cultural tourism, supported by regional documentation efforts, museum exhibitions, and artisan training programs for youth.
