Hayy Jameel Exhibition Explores Jeddah's Maritime Memory and Heritage
The exhibition "Time Reflected on Water," hosted at Hayy Jameel in Jeddah, evokes the city's collective memory and its enduring connection to the Red Sea. Through varied artworks, the showcase draws inspiration from the movement of merchant vessels, fishing nets, and historical pilgrimage routes—alongside the intercultural exchanges that shaped the coastal city's unique identity.
Running through October 17, the exhibition features works by seven participants from the second edition of the Recess program. Utilizing diverse media and techniques, the artists examine the intersection of past and present and explore how geographic space influences memory formation.
Among the featured exhibits is a sail-inspired textile installation crafted using the appliqué technique. The piece reflects shared communal values and documents the cohort's creative journey while drawing directly on Red Sea navigational heritage.
The artists also utilized soundscapes to archive geographic memory. Through specialized sessions, participants recorded ambient audio along Jeddah's southern Corniche at sunset, examining their environment through an auditory lens. Field visits the Red Sea Museum further informed their creative processes, deepening their connection to the city's maritime past.
The exhibition reflects Art Jameel's commitment to nurturing emerging talent and providing platforms for artistic experimentation, linking contemporary creative expression to the surrounding cultural landscape and enriching Jeddah's vibrant arts scene.
