RGA: Saudi Road Code Classifies Roads to Enhance Safety

The Roads General Authority (RGA) has stated that the Saudi Road Code establishes a classification system for roads within and outside urban areas, aiming to improve safety. This effort comes as part of ongoing initiatives to enhance the quality of life and achieve the highest levels of safety and efficiency across the Kingdom’s road network.

The RGA pointed out that the Saudi Road Code outlines several categories of roads. These include highways, which are characterized by high speeds, full access control, and connections between cities and governorates without traffic signals or direct intersections. It also includes local roads that support low-speed travel within residential and commercial neighborhoods with light traffic, ensuring safety. Arterial roads are designed to facilitate movement within cities and between major areas, accommodating heavy traffic flow with organized intersections and traffic signals. Additionally, collector roads connect neighborhoods to arterial roads by channeling traffic from residential areas to main routes.

The authority emphasized that the code serves as a comprehensive technical reference for all entities responsible for roads in the Kingdom, including ministries, city development authorities, municipalities, and governorates. It is designed to equip these bodies with the information needed to plan, design, implement, operate, and maintain all types of roads across the Kingdom while considering environmental factors and the requirements of autonomous vehicles. The code also includes guidelines, drawings, procedures, and checklists for all road networks to ensure minimum acceptable standards of quality, safety, operational efficiency, economic performance, and sustainability.
