Saudi Arabia Marks International Day of Combating Sand and Dust Storms
Saudi Arabia marked the International Day of Combating Sand and Dust Storms on July 12 under the theme “Working Across Agendas for Resilience and Sustainability,” reaffirming its commitment to environmental protection and early warning systems.
A highlight of Saudi Arabia’s efforts is the Sand and Dust Storm Regional Center in Jeddah, launched in 2022 as part of the Middle East Green Initiative. Accredited by the World Meteorological Organization, the center supports countries across the Gulf and the Middle East through forecasting, data exchange, and scientific cooperation.
Chief Executive Officer of Sand and Dust Storm Regional Center Jumaan bin Saad Al-Qahtani emphasized Saudi Arabia’s global role in enhancing readiness, research, and training. He noted a $10 million pledge to boost early warning systems over five years, underscoring the Kingdom’s dedication to innovative solutions for atmospheric challenges.
