Belden Strengthens Network Security with New Anti-Counterfeit Cable Initiative
In an era of rapidly expanding digital infrastructure, ensuring network reliability and safety has become increasingly critical. In this interview, Brian Lieser, Chief Commercial Officer at Belden Inc., discusses the company’s role in connectivity and its new initiative to combat counterfeit cables.
1- What is Belden, and what role does the company play in today’s connected world?
Belden provides complete connection solutions and facilitates the seamless exchange of information that is essential to modern businesses and daily life. As connectivity accelerates and grows more complex, organisations face mounting challenges, including signal loss, security risks, fragmented networks, and scattered data. Belden serves as the critical link between people, information, and ideas, cutting through this complexity to create clarity and unlock new possibilities. With more than 120 years of innovation, Belden combines vast experience with cutting‑edge network and data technologies. In Saudi Arabia, Belden’s technologies directly support the ambitions of Vision 2030 by strengthening reliable infrastructure, smart cities, and industrial modernisation, enabling projects to operate efficiently and safely. Recently, Belden has announced its goal to become a leading contributor to high-quality licensed cable capacities on the regional market.
2- What is the focus of Belden’s new counterfeit-mitigation campaign, and how does it support customers?
The campaign is designed to help installers and buyers safeguard their projects by making product verification intuitive and accessible. By introducing a tamper‑proof holographic fingerprint on selected cable SKUs and the Authentic Vision/Belden Authenticator app, we want to highlight the critical importance of using quality cables while providing an effective means to confirm authenticity. Without adding complexity, the campaign empowers customers to make informed choices and directs them towards authorised Belden distributors, thereby ensuring reliable performance, immediate and long-term project safety. This approach is especially significant in Saudi Arabia, where major infrastructure and industrial developments support Vision 2030’s commitment to high‑quality, safe, and sustainable development.
3- What is the main objective of Belden’s counterfeit-mitigation programme?
The programme is designed to protect critical projects by ensuring that only authentic Belden cables are used in critical applications. Belden partnered with Authentic Vision to launch a user-friendly app for instant cable authenticity checks. This app leverages advanced Holographic Fingerprint™ technology for secure identification, allowing users to simply scan the tamper-proof holographic label on each Belden package to instantly verify their cable's authenticity. This added layer of protection strengthens system performance and safety while safeguarding long‑term project investments by reducing the risk of reliability issues, safety hazards, and financial losses associated with non-authentic cables.
4- How does the counterfeit-detection process work from the moment a cable is scanned?
Using the Authentic Vision app, a user can scan a holographic fingerprint to determine its authenticity. If the fingerprint is invalid, the product is flagged as non-authentic, and the user is directed to a dedicated landing page titled ‘ WARNING: COUNTERFEIT PRODUCT DETECTED’. We have set this page up as a knowledge depository about the issue and to highlight the major risks associated with using non-authentic cables, including performance and reliability issues, safety hazards, and financial consequences. This measure helps ensure that only verified, high-quality cables are deployed in critical infrastructure and industrial applications.
5- How does this solution make it easier for installers and buyers to protect their projects?
The solution streamlines decision‑making by giving users immediate clarity during the verification process. If a cable is identified as non‑authentic, the landing page provides a direct link to authorised Belden distributors, enabling installers and buyers to quickly access genuine Belden cables hassle-free. This straightforward process reinforces performance and safety while maintaining overall project value, without adding any complexity to procurement or installation workflows.
6- What operational risks do counterfeit cables pose to organisations and critical projects?
Counterfeit cables can seriously impair operations in several ways. On the performance side, they frequently cause signal degradation, network instability, and unexpected system downtime that can disrupt business continuity. In terms of security, the use of non-compliant materials increases the risk of fire hazards, electrical failures, and regulatory violations, thereby endangering both people and facilities. These performance and safety failures might ultimately translate into serious financial consequences, including voided warranties, costly rework, project delays, and limited access to Belden’s technical support.
7- Why is choosing authentic cables essential for long-term performance and protection?
Authentic cables are engineered to deliver guaranteed performance and long-term reliability. Manufactured in ISO‑certified facilities, each cable is built to meet strict specifications for bandwidth, signal integrity, and durability. Verified safety and compliance guarantee appropriate fire ratings and regulatory approval, protecting both people and property in demanding environments. Beyond product quality, genuine Belden cables include full warranty coverage and access to Belden’s technical expertise, providing troubleshooting support throughout the project's lifecycle.
