Harid Nights Revives Pearl Diving Heritage in Farasan Islands
Pearl diving once formed a cornerstone of social and economic life in the Farasan Islands in Jazan Region, shaping the maritime identity of the community.
The traditional craft supported livelihoods and contributed to the prosperity of island residents.
Diving voyages fostered values of patience and solidarity, along with customs such as vessel preparation, role distribution, and maritime chants.
Veteran diver Othman bin Mousa Ahmed Ibrahim, 75, recalled more than 40 years of experience during his participation in Harid Nights Festival 22.
He said voyages required careful preparation, with boat owners ensuring vessels were ready and providing provisions for sailors’ families.
Food supplies were limited to red corn or wheat, along with drinking water stored in clay containers.
Supervisor of Al-Qassar Village activities Othman bin Mohammed Humq said the event offers a live experience of maritime heritage by showcasing traditional tools and practices.
He added that the festival supports artisans and families working in the cottage industry and helps connect younger generations with their cultural heritage.
The event also strengthens the status of the Farasan Islands as a cultural and tourism destination.
