Pebbled Courtyards of Prophet's Mosque Reflect Enduring History and Renovation

The pebbled courtyards of the Prophet's Mosque are open-air, unroofed spaces located behind Al-Rawdah Al-Sharifa. As an extension of the mosque, they have been historically linked to a space where the Companions—may Allah be pleased with them—gathered to teach, exchange knowledge, and discuss religious matters.

Originally covered in soil, the ground was first paved with pebbles from Al-Aqiq Valley during the caliphate of Umar ibn Al-Khattab to provide a cleaner, more comfortable prayer environment for worshippers.

Over the centuries, particularly during the Saudi era, a second courtyard was added and linked to the first to enhance visitor flow. In modern times, these spaces have been upgraded with large automated umbrellas supported by white marble pillars. These architectural features reflect a commitment to harmonizing historical significance with modern amenities to serve worshippers.
