KFUPM Launches Groundbreaking Program Merging Engineering and Medicine

King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals (KFUPM) has announced the launch of the region’s first-of-its-kind academic program: the “Bachelor of Biomedical Engineering,” developed in collaboration with King Saud bin Abdulaziz University for Health Sciences (KSAU-HS). This pioneering initiative integrates the fields of engineering and medicine to prepare a new generation of physician-engineers.
The program grants students dual admission to both institutions. Over the course of eight years, participants will first complete a four-year bioengineering degree at KFUPM, followed by four years of medical training at KSAU-HS. Upon completion, students will hold two bachelor's degrees—one in bioengineering and another in medicine and surgery.
Notably, the program adds only one to two years to the duration of a traditional medical degree while equipping graduates with a strong engineering foundation.
This new academic track marks a transformative step in Saudi medical education, aligning with the goals of Vision 2030 to elevate the Kingdom’s healthcare system and develop highly skilled national talent. It aims to produce physicians capable of addressing future healthcare challenges through advanced technological and engineering solutions.
The first cohort of students is set to begin studies in the upcoming academic year.
