Environmental Compliance Monitors Water, Air, and Soil Quality in More Than 900 Hajj Sites
The National Center for Environmental Compliance (NCEC) has conducted more than 900 inspection tours covering the environment surrounding the pilgrims’ journey from Madinah to Makkah and throughout the holy sites during this year’s Hajj season.
Official Spokesperson of the National Center for Environmental Compliance Saad Al-Matrafi stated that the center’s inspectors have completed approximately 90% of the preemptive inspections to ensure the safety of water, air, and soil. He noted that monitoring efforts will continue until pilgrims complete their rituals in a healthy, pollutant-free environment.
Al-Matrafi explained that environmental monitoring began in mid-Dhu al-Qi’dah, with inspection tours conducted across various sites in Makkah and the holy sites. A total of 518 visits targeted facilities and activities that could impact the environment surrounding pilgrims, either directly or indirectly. In Madinah, inspectors conducted approximately 396 visits, focusing on historical and tourist sites where pilgrims reside during the season.
He added that environmental monitoring is also supported by advanced technologies, including nine air quality monitoring stations—six located in Makkah and the Holy Sites and three in Madinah. These stations operate around the clock to measure 22 air quality components. If any pollutant is detected, field teams are dispatched immediately to the site, identify the source, and coordinate with relevant authorities to eliminate the cause of pollution.
