Environment Ministry: Saudi Arabia's Integrated Food Security Model Yields High Self-Sufficiency Rates
The Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture confirmed that the Kingdom has built an integrated food security model balancing local production development with efficient import management, enhancing food stability and ensuring the availability of high-quality products across all regions in line with Saudi Vision 2030.
The agricultural sector recorded a compound annual growth rate exceeding 7% over the past five years, while modern irrigation technologies reduced non-renewable water use by 52% compared with 2016. Total agricultural and food commodity production exceeded 16 million tons in 2024, contributing approximately $31.5 billion to GDP.
Self-sufficiency rates exceed 100% for several products, including dates at 121%, dairy products at 131%, and table eggs at 103%. In animal products, shrimp self-sufficiency reached 149%, poultry meat 72%, and red meat 62%.
