Weqaa Develops Prevention, Health Risk Response System under One Health Approach
The National Center for the Prevention and Control of Plant Pests and Animal Diseases (Weqaa) is implementing the One Health approach through an integrated system focused on protecting plant and animal health while contributing to the preservation of public health and environmental safety. These efforts support food security and the sustainability of the agricultural sector, in line with the objectives of Saudi Vision 2030.
Coinciding with One Health Day, the One Health concept represents an integrated approach aimed at achieving a sustainable balance and improving public, animal, and ecosystem health. It primarily seeks to strengthen the prevention of zoonotic diseases, which are transmitted between animals and humans, combat antimicrobial resistance, and ensure food safety through cooperation among various disciplines and entities.
As chair of the One Health Technical Committee, Weqaa contributes to achieving the objectives of this approach by integrating efforts, promoting cooperation across sectors, and exchanging expertise. It also works to expand knowledge-sharing and raise awareness of the approach among farmers, livestock breeders, medical practitioners, and community members to help protect public health.
The One Health approach addresses the close interconnection between human, animal, and plant health and the environment, as well as the growing number of shared health threats. These challenges require coordinated efforts among relevant sectors and the development of prevention, early detection, and response mechanisms to reduce risks and their impact on health, production, and natural resources.
Under its strategy, Weqaa pursues an integrated approach to controlling animal diseases and their vectors in line with One Health. It implements animal disease control programs and conducts insect vector surveillance and control under structured plans designed to improve preventive and field operations.
The center's efforts include implementing proactive measures, early warning systems, and responses to health threats. It also raises awareness among specialists, community members, and stakeholders to support preventive practices and strengthen preparedness to address shared challenges.
As part of its multisectoral work, Weqaa established the One Health Technical Committee, which it chairs and which comprises representatives of several government and academic entities. The committee aims to consolidate efforts and coordinate work among relevant bodies. Weqaa also works to strengthen partnerships with specialized entities, supporting the integration of roles in protecting human, animal, and plant health and the environment.
