King Saud University Medical City: First Saudi Public Health Facility to Submit UN Sustainability Report

King Saud University Medical City (KSUMC) has submitted its sustainability report to the United Nations, becoming the first Saudi government health facility on this platform. This move reinforces its commitment to integrating healthcare with environmental, social, and governance (ESG) standards in line with Saudi Vision 2030 and the UN's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

In a statement, CEO of KSUMC Prof. Ahmad Salah Hersi emphasized the facility's aim to be a leader in specialized healthcare, medical education, and research, balancing innovation with social responsibility. He credited these achievements to strong leadership support and the focus of Saudi Vision 2030 on humanity, health, and the environment.

Chief Strategic Planning Officer of KSUMC Prof. Saleh bin Abdulrahman bin Saleh noted that the report highlights key areas reflecting the facility's commitment to sustainability and excellence. These include a 31% reduction in energy consumption (over 41.5 million kilowatt-hours annually) and a decrease in carbon dioxide emissions by 2,746 tons through solar energy adoption. The medical city also planted over 47,000 trees and launched an electric vehicle-charging network.

The medical city's commitment to inclusivity is evident, with women in 31% of leadership roles. It provides over one million outpatient services annually, trains more than 8,000 healthcare professionals through 126 accredited programs, and has logged over 5,000 volunteer hours.

Innovation is central to its strategy, with over 10 patented medical devices developed. KSUMC hosted the Digital Health Innovation Hackathon “Healthon," offering prizes exceeding SAR600,000, and published over 261 scientific papers.

The report also outlines the human impact of the medical city's activities, including over 500 cochlear implant surgeries and service to over 60,000 families through the "A Doctor for Every Family" initiative. Financially, KSUMC achieved savings exceeding SAR528 million through efficiency projects.
