Saudi Road Code Advances Roads General Authority’s Strategy to Establish Unified Regulatory Framework
The Saudi Road Code has contributed to advancing the Roads General Authority’s (RGA) strategy to establish a unified legislative and regulatory framework for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s road sector by standardizing technical and operational standards nationwide.
The code enables road-owning entities to systematically and sustainably improve the quality of their work through comprehensive standards covering the entire road lifecycle, from design and construction to operation and ongoing maintenance. This unified regulatory framework helps ensure the highest levels of efficiency and safety.
The RGA said the code focuses on key areas that enhance road safety and traffic flow. It establishes regulatory requirements for entrances and exits at rest areas and fuel stations to manage access and reduce traffic risks in these vital areas. It also standardizes the meanings of road signs, regulates traffic signal timing, and adopts unified standards for road markings, contributing to more orderly, efficient, and clear traffic movement.
The authority added that the code places particular emphasis on facilitating mobility for pedestrians and people with disabilities. It sets unified standards for pedestrian paths and accessible parking spaces, aligned with requirements to ensure safe and easy passage for all. It also establishes unified standards for speed bumps and safety barriers and specifies appropriate locations for their use to maximize their effectiveness on roads.
The RGA affirmed its commitment to providing a unified and transparent legislative and regulatory framework that ensures policy integration and regulatory compliance through flexible and robust oversight mechanisms. This aligns with its mandate to oversee and regulate the road sector by developing the necessary policies and regulations, including the Saudi Road Code.
The authority noted that it will continue expanding the application of modern technical standards to improve road users’ experience and ensure the highest levels of safety, efficiency, and sustainability, ultimately supporting the objectives of the road sector program.
