Death Toll from Indonesia Earthquake Rises to 70
Authorities reported today that the death toll from the powerful earthquake that struck Indonesia on Saturday has risen to 70, alongside a rapidly escalating humanitarian crisis that has forced at least 40,000 people into shelters.
Data released Monday by the Indonesian Disaster Management Agency initially showed 12,800 people displaced by the 7.7-magnitude earthquake on the island of Flores, a figure that has since surged. The disaster has also left at least 1,100 people injured, representing a tenfold increase from the previous day's reports.
Indonesia experiences frequent earthquakes due to its position on the Pacific Ring of Fire, an arc of intense seismic and volcanic activity stretching from Japan through Southeast Asia and across the Pacific basin.
